Karma Mimamsa: The Role of Planets and the Truth of Karmic Fruits

(A scriptural and philosophical reflection)

Introduction

Amidst the serene and divine slopes of the Himalayas, Goddess Parvati once asked Lord Shiva a profound question:

“O Lord! You have previously said that all good and bad circumstances in a person’s life are the fruits of their own actions. But in the world, we observe that people often attribute all auspicious or inauspicious outcomes to planetary influences and are constantly engaged in the worship and appeasement of these planets. Is their belief justified?”

This question prompted a timeless and universal response from Mahadev — not just for Parvati, but for all seekers of truth.

The Question of the Goddess

Parvati respectfully asked,

“O Lord, if all results come from one’s own actions (karma), why do people so strongly believe in planetary influence and dedicate themselves to pacifying or worshiping the grahas (planets)? Please dispel my doubt.”

Lord Shiva’s Response: Planets Are Indicators, Not Doers

With a compassionate smile, Mahadev replied,

“Devi! Your question is thoughtful and worthy of reflection. Listen carefully to the scriptural truth regarding this matter.”

He clarified:

“Planets and constellations (nakshatras) merely indicate the auspicious or inauspicious results of one’s past actions. They do not themselves cause or execute any result.”

Just as a thermometer shows the presence of fever but does not cause the fever, planets too indicate the nature of our past karmas — good or bad.

Karma Alone is the Root Cause

Mahadev declared:

“A person’s actions — good or bad — are the true cause of their current state. Auspicious planetary indications reflect meritorious deeds, and inauspicious ones reflect sinful deeds.”

As per the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad:

“Yatha-karma yatha-shrutam hi syat”
— As the karma, so will be the result.

Thus, the current life is merely a reflection of one’s own past karmas, and the present karmas will shape the future.

If Planets Do Not Cause Events, Why Is Jyotish Useful?

Parvati’s question naturally extends — “Then what is the use of astrology (Jyotish)?”

Shiva explains:

“For the welfare of beings, the planetary system serves as a celestial clock that reveals the nature of the past and future karmas.”

Just as a map shows the path and dangers on the way, Jyotish (astrology) helps one anticipate and prepare for life’s journey. It shows tendencies and timings — not causation.

Graha Dosha or Karma Dosha?

Contrary to the common belief that "Rahu is bad," "Saturn is cruel," or "Mars brings destruction," Shiva dispels this misconception:

“The planets do not bring fortune or misfortune on their own — these are reflections of one’s karma.”

In other words, a malefic planet is not the problem — it is only indicating a problem within the soul’s karmic account.

Scriptural References Supporting This View

  1. Brahma Sutras (3.2.38):

“Na karmavibhagād iti chet, nānā, adṛṣṭādi-phalasy viṣaye vibhāgaḥ syāt”
    — The differences in destiny among beings arise due to differences in karmas.

  2. Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 4, Verse 17):

“The truth about action (karma), inaction (akarma), and wrong action (vikarma) is extremely difficult to understand.”

  3. Manusmriti (12.3):

    “Sarvam karmānusāraṁ hi puruṣāṇāṁ sukhāsukhe”
    — All the happiness and sorrow experienced by beings are according to their karma.

Then Why Do People Worship Planets?

  • Due to ignorance, people mistake the indicator for the cause.

  • Sometimes due to fear-mongering or misguidance by charlatans.

  • However, the true purpose of Graha worship is inner purification, not external manipulation.

Are Remedies Useless Then?

Not at all. Planetary remedies (upayas) are beneficial when:

  • One understands that planets reflect karma.

  • The goal is not to "change fate" but to purify the self.

  • The remedies include spiritual practices, charity, mantra japa, fasting, and ethical living — all of which refine one’s karmic path.

Hence, Graha Shanti (planetary appeasement) is meaningful when it aids self-transformation.

Conclusion:

🌿 Planets are indicators, not causal agents.
🌿 Karma is the root of all experiences.
🌿 Astrology is a guidance tool, not a judge.
🌿 True remedy lies in self-improvement, not blame.
🌿 Graha worship is fruitful only when it leads to karmic refinement.

❖ Lord Shiva’s Final Word:

“It is a popular misconception that planets cause events. In truth, they merely reflect the consequences of one’s own deeds.”

i only focus on hard work and do my prayers for it is my duty to serve my gods who created me and gave such a beautiful existence. so not for the fulfillment of desires i am at the mandirs and churchs but for showing gratitude for my life. but sir, karma is one thing, luck is another, so i think many things in life manifest on there own too due to planetary alignments and you as a guru of it are meant to redirect us in the direction meant for us.
