Cancer (कर्क)
Published on in Zodiac Signs

Cancer – the sign that represents the divine consciousness, the center of the horoscope – holds the energy of the Moon, which represents mann (the flexible and ever-flowing imagination in the mind). Cancer falling in the watery trine, ruled by a watery planet, shows its adaptable and flexible nature. Imagination and creativity is what enable humans to manifest something new, and Cancer helps one in building what hasn’t been done. It is the sign of introspection, to look within and attain wisdom. At the same time, as it represents divine consciousness lying in space (ether being Jupiter’s element), Jupiter exalts in this sign, allowing one to attain surface-level knowledge of divine teachings.
Water has no inherent energy but flows constantly without the need for initiation, so the planet of energy, Mars, debilitates in Cancer. The need for constant wandering, traveling, and exploring is Cancerian energy. The nakshatras of Punarvasu (Jupiter) and Pushya (Saturn) falling in Cancer show the combined energy of Dharma and Karma. A proper balance of both energies helps in the attainment of moksha/salvation, thus Cancer naturally lies in the moksha trine. The beginning of Ashlesha nakshatra, which can be cunning and cruel, also falls in Cancer, indicating the inception of one’s imagination in evil deeds. The crab represents Cancer, staying both in the upper layers of the sea and on land, showing Cancer’s adaptability. Life on earth represents an individual’s physical needs, while that in water represents emotions.
